ii) The permitted area of signs comprised of individual letters, figures or elements and
            attached to a building including but not limited to:, awning, building directory,
            canopy, marquee, roof and wall signs shall be calculated by determining the
            smallest regular geometric shape (rectangle, circle, trapezoid, triangle, etc.) or
            combination of regular geometric shapes that encompasses the perimeter of all
            elements in the display, the frame, and any applied background that is not part of
            the architecture of the building. When separate elements are organized to form a
            single sign, but are separated by open space, the sign area and dimensions shall be
            calculated by determining the geometric shape or combination of shapes which
            includes all the display areas. Minor appendages to a particular rectangular shape,
            as determined by the Building Commissioner, shall not be included in the total area
