An act of the Legislature, passed October 30, 1794, granted the society lands “to the respective towns in which such lands lie,” for the use of the schools. The act also provided: “It shall be the duty of the selectmen, in the respective towns, in the name and behalf of such towns, if necessary, to demand, sue for, and recover the possession of such lands, and the same to lease out, as long as water runs or wood grows;
