forever. This power is given to the Legislature by the reservation in the charters of the townships; and, by the provisions of G. L. 1479, that only so much of the common law as is applicable to our local situation and circumstances and is not repugnant to our Constitution and laws is law in this State; and so far only are the courts of this State bound to recognize it.
