ABOUT TENANT PETITIONS FOR RENT DECREASE
Tenants in units that are fully covered by Berkeley’s Rent Ordinance can file this petition to ask for a
reduction to their unit’s rent ceiling. Tenants in the same unit must file one petition. Tenants may
request a rent ceiling decrease for one or more of the following reasons:
• Substandard Condition of The Rental • Failure to Return Security Deposit After
Unit Moving Out
• Decrease in Amenities or Living Space • Failure to Return Interest on Security
• Decrease in Number of Tenants Allowed Deposit
• Illegally High Rent
